OWL CITY

Owl City (aka Adam Young) is an American electronic artist! He's most known for his 2009 song Fireflies and 2012 song Good Time (with Carly Rae Jepsen), but he's released 8 albums; his first full album released in 2008 and his most recent album released in 2023! Additionally he's composed a few songs for movies and TV shows, among other projects. He's kind of nostalgic for a lot of people due to his most popular songs coming out over 10 years ago. He's a super special music artist to me!

MY THOUGHTS

Well, if you didn't know already, my username (thetechnicolorphase) is a reference to the song The Technicolor Phase, by Owl City. I don't know how else to prove I'm a big fan of his work. But yeah, if it wasn't obvious, I ADORE Owl City's stuff! It's hard to describe why, but something about his style is so appealing to me. It's incredibly distinct and doesn't sound like other electronic music artists out there; also, his lyrics are super interesting and sometimes pretty heartfelt! I really admire his style, it's so bright and poppy, I always feel happy (and a bit nostalgic) whenever I put his music on to listen to. I feel like Owl City is one of the few artists I can just put on anything he's made, and enjoy it, even if I don't have it memorized or listen to it often. I don't wanna say all his music sounds the same but you can always tell when he made it, it's so unique, which is a good thing! Even his other projects like Sky Sailing are recognizable. Also, I just kinda wanna study Adam Young under a microscope. He's very interesting to me! His Twitter is so funny, he just posts like anything on there.

I don't really think there's an exact reason why I got introduced to Owl City, as there were a few factors. First, I did hear his stuff on the radio a lot. I very much remember when Good Time came out, it was being played everywhere. And I definitely knew what Fireflies was as well when I was a kid, and I did enjoy the few songs of his that got really popular. Also, as a huge Disney fan, when Wreck-It-Ralph came out I was obsessed When Can I See You Again. Then, that song got used for the parade Paint the Night at the theme parks, so that just fueled my interest in his music! But I don't think it was really until when I was in middle school that I started to listen to him more actively outside of the few popular songs I had already known. I listened to The Midsummer Station and All Things Bright and Beautiful a lot during that time. And it just really stuck with me! I've been a huge fan since I seriously started listening. So much so I made my username one of my favorite songs by him...

FAVORITE STUFF

ALBUM: The Midsummer Station

FAV SONGS: Dreams and Disasters, Shooting Star, Good Time, Embers, Metropolis

Definitely my most listened to Owl City album. I love everything about it; the songs are great, the vibes are cool (and kinda sticks out from his other albums in my opinion!), the album cover is so pretty I used it like 3 times now... just everything about it is cool! I adore this album, as I listened to it a TON in early 2020.

Silly fun fact, but I used Metropolis for a project in one of my high school classes, I used the lyrics as an example for traits of cities or something. I don't 100% remember, it's been a while, but I think it was funny I spread Owl City propaganda that way.

ALBUM: All Things Bright and Beautiful

FAV SONGS: The Real World, Deer In The Headlights, Galaxies, Alligator Sky, How I Became The Sea

This is probably my favorite Owl City album; there's some really really good songs on this one! I imagined a lot of OC animatics to some of these songs when I was in freshman year. It feels so bright overall, like a good summer day. I guess that's the description that came to my head first. A banger album with some really neat tracks!

ALBUM: Maybe I'm Dreaming

FAV SONGS: On The Wing, The Saltwater Room, The Technicolor Phase, West Coast Friendship

I think this album is pretty underrated, it's got some really good songs on here! I'm biased, because The Technicolor Phase is on here, but even then I love it dearly. I think some of the intros on the songs (like Super Honeymoon and This Is The Future) have a really unique sound to them and stand out because of it. Definitely one of the albums I think represents what I like about Owl City the most!

ALBUM: Ocean Eyes

FAV SONGS: Cave In, Hello Seattle, Meteor Shower, Fireflies, Butterfly Wings

This album is just so... iconic, in my opinion! I feel like Fireflies being on here makes it a bit more recognizable to people who aren't huge Owl City listeners, but I think in general that it's a great representation of his style. The album cover, the songs... it all really comes together. It's easy for me to listen to, and easy for me to reccomend to people. I don't know what else to say! Just a really solid album overall.
